If a law criminalizes a previously legal activity, and the majority doesn’t see anything wrong with it, the majority will break the law. Casually. All this accomplishes is a nudge-nudge-wink-wink-say-no-more society of casual law breakers. Thus, stupid laws breeds disrespect for law.
The legal system, like the monetary system, requires belief and support from citizens.
