The Union Jack The flag of England flew over Canada, first as an English colony, then the Dominion of Canada presided over by Sir John A. MacDonald. Those Americans that did not want to revolt against England (yes, there were some!) moved north of the 49th parallel and remained loyalists. Canada’s sovereignty was won by negotiation, not blood.
